Les Williams - Leather Artist

Les Williams in Studio

Originally from Geelong, Les Williams interest in art was nurtured at a young age through private drawing and painting.  While living in Kerang he spent as much time as possible with local art groups in the area.  This contact developed and improved his interest in painting, although mainly with oils.  It wasn't until June in 1980 that Les became involved with leather.  Through his voluntary work with the local youth programs, he assisted the leather instructor and soon developed a keen interest in this artistic medium.

Les found that this medium allows him to expand his artistic creativity and is now a full time hobby that he enjoys immensely.  Using his artistic skills and experimentation he has created a wide range of articles purely from the leather medium, and enjoys both, passing on his knowledge and learning from others.

In 1985 Les completed a two year full time Applied Arts course, majoring in Leatherwork at the Bendigo College of Technical and Further Education, winning the Outstanding Achievement Award for his work.  In 1986 he completed a basic course of Teacher Training through the Hawthorne Institute of Education.  Since which time he has been involved in day and weekend workshops tutoring youths, prisoners and koori's from beginners to advanced leather artists.

Les has demonstrated different aspects of his leather art at a number of Art and Craft shows around Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, New Zealand and the USA.  Some of his accolades include Best of Show and Best of category at the 1993 International Federation of Leather Guilds in the USA for his designs and craftsmanship.
